CA2A RIDER
EDUCATION Watch That Merge Traveling by motorcycle on a multi-lane highway, calls for extra awareness by the bike rider. When riding in the right hand lane and you approach a car entering from an on-ramp, the rider normally moves one lane to the left to allow the merging vehicle to enter the highway. This is relatively simple and routine move in most instances, but on a motorcycle one needs to be extra cautious. Motorcycle visability becomes an important factor because as the bike rider moves over a lane to the left the driver of the merging car may not see them as easily. Also, don’t automatically assume that the merging car will complete their merge in the right hand lane. Often, drivers merge onto a multi-lane highway and desire to be in the second or “faster” lane so they can pass slower traffic. This merging scenario is even more critical when traveling in a group of motorcycles. Cars must be able to safely merge without the worry of a large group of motorcycles blocking the on-ramp.
